Cleaning and Storage Methods for Paint Brushes

The investment made in a quality paint brush only pays off with correct care. An uncleaned brush directly harms the result on the next use.

Cleaning for Water-Based Paints

Immediately after use, the brush should be washed under tap water. For paint that has seeped to the base of the bristles, it needs to be lathered by rubbing in the palm. After the first wash, wash again with mild liquid soap.

Cleaning for Oil-Based Paints

Mineral spirits or thinner is used. The brush is left in a container of solvent for a few minutes, then the bristles are cleaned in the palm. In the final stage, it is washed with soapy water.

Storage

The washed and dried brush should be kept hanging so the bristles stay straight, or in a horizontal storage box. Placing it in a glass or bucket with the bristles down breaks the bristles.
