In a significant portion of homes in Istanbul, there is a desire to include the balcony in the living space without creating extra heating and lighting costs. However, this decision can be a complex choice with legal, technical and aesthetic dimensions.

Legal Status

In Türkiye, balcony enclosure is subject to zoning legislation. An enclosure carried out without applying for a permit from the municipality can be considered an "unauthorised structure". Obtaining permission is strongly advised.

Technical Requirements

The choice of glass and frame system is important for both thermal insulation and aesthetics. Double glazing with PVC or aluminium frames is the most preferred system.

The floor-level difference between the enclosed balcony and the living room should be removed, the heating system should be extended to cover the balcony section, and the decoration should preserve the visual continuity of the two areas.
