Lighting Layers in Decoration
Guide to Lighting Layers
Good interior lighting consists of three basic layers. Using these layers together increases both functionality and aesthetic depth.
1. Ambient Lighting
The ceiling fixture or pendant lamp that provides the room's general brightness. It fills the whole room with homogeneous light. A dimmer feature makes ideal control possible.
2. Task Lighting
Focused light for an activity such as reading, cooking or applying make-up. A desk lamp, under-counter kitchen spots and a lamp beside the bathroom mirror fall into this category.
3. Accent Lighting
Used to highlight an object, painting or architectural detail. Spotlights, LED strips and lighting within niches are in the accent category.
Light Temperature
2700–3000K (yellow-white) warm light is ideal for the living room and bedroom; 4000–5000K (daylight) is ideal for the kitchen and bathroom.
