Tactile Home Decoration for the Visually Impaired
Universal Design and the Visually Impaired
Good design includes everyone. In the living spaces of visually impaired or low-vision individuals, some additional precautions and design decisions both increase accessibility and do not compromise aesthetics.
Tactile Surfaces
Surfaces of different texture provide guidance between areas. A smooth floor in the corridor and a textured rug or different floor covering in the room highlight transition points.
Colour Contrast
For low-vision individuals, the colour contrast between wall and door and the difference between the light switch and the wall surface are of decisive importance.
Furniture Consistency
Keeping furniture positions fixed supports the strengthening of spatial memory. Frequently moved furniture creates difficulty.
