Teen Room Design: Identity and Personal Space
Teen Room Design Principles
Adolescence is a period when the search for identity is intensely experienced. The room design should make space for this search while also providing conditions for productive study and healthy rest.
Allow Personalisation
Magnetic or pegboard panels and vertical systems for hanging posters and pictures give the teenager a say in their own space. Leaving room for the teenager's preference in wallpaper choice both strengthens the bond and makes the space more meaningful.
Study Area Design
In adolescence the load of lessons and homework increases. Adequate desk surface, an ergonomic chair and natural lighting directly affect study performance.
Storage
Sufficient, accessible storage solutions for collections, books, game consoles and sports equipment make it easier to stay organised.
Flexibility
Teen rooms should be spaces open to frequent change. Keeping fixed furniture to a minimum allows for rearrangement.
