The Fine Points of Curtain Choice

Beyond covering a window, a curtain is an important textile element that completes a room's decoration language. The wrong choice can pull even the best-decorated room down to average.

Fabric Choice

Linen curtains provide a natural, light look and filter light. Velvet curtains stand out with their luxurious, sound-absorbing quality. Sheer voile curtains carry light into the space while preserving privacy.

The Length Rule

Curtains should end 1–2 cm above the floor, or make full contact with it, or extend 5–10 cm onto the floor for a "puddle" effect. Curtains that end halfway cut the space across the middle.

Hanging Height

Mounting the curtain rail not just above the window frame, but midway between the ceiling and the window or very close to the ceiling, makes the room look taller.

Colour Choice

The curtain colour should be from the same tone family as the wall or a complementary tone. A slightly darker shade of the wall colour is a safe choice for curtains.
