Painting Over Wallpaper

In some cases stripping old wallpaper can be very laborious. In this situation, painting over the paper may seem like a sensible solution, but certain conditions must be met.

When Is It Possible?

Painting can be done only if there is a single layer of paper, if the paper is fully stuck down and not bubbling, and if there is no surface damage. Painting over more than one layer of old paper is definitely not recommended.

The Preparation Stage

Loose edges and bubbled areas must be fixed down with paste. The whole surface must be dry. At least two coats of primer may be needed to cover the paper's pattern with paint.

Which Paint Is Used?

Water-based acrylic paints should be preferred. Starting with a special primer that does not wet the paper prevents the paper from swelling. Matte and silk-matte paints hide texture flaws better.

The Experts' View

The great majority of professional painters find this method problematic in the long run. Moisture beneath the paper paves the way for the paint to peel later. The correct solution is to strip the paper and paint onto a clean surface.
