Concrete-Look Walls with Spatula Paint
Spatula Paint: Industrial Aesthetics
Concrete-effect surfaces have become an indispensable element of interior design since the early 2020s. Instead of using expensive, heavy real concrete, it is possible to achieve the same visual effect with spatula paint.
Material Selection
Spatula paints used for a concrete look consist of Portland cement, sand and special pigments. Some products contain acrylic and are easier to apply. A polymer additive can be added to increase the flexibility of the surface.
Colour Palette
The natural concrete colour is light grey. Adding anthracite, dark smoke or white to it captures different tones. Using rust red or yellowish oxide as accent colours creates a rich texture.
Application Steps
A three-stage application is done: primer + two spatula coats + protective varnish. Each layer is left to dry for 24 hours. The direction and angle of the spatula movement determine the final texture; this is why experienced application is essential.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping the primer → poor adhesion
- Keeping the layer too thick → cracking
- Not allowing enough drying time → leaving marks
- Forgetting the final varnish → vulnerability to stains
