Colour Theory and Interior Design

Although colour choice seems like an intuitive process, a deep theoretical foundation lies behind it. Knowledge of basic colour theory is the key to achieving consistent, aesthetic results in decoration projects.

The Colour Wheel

The colour wheel, containing 12 colours, covers primary (red, blue, yellow), secondary (orange, green, purple) and tertiary colours. Correct colour combinations are derived from this wheel.

Complementary Colours

Colours exactly opposite each other on the colour wheel are complementary: blue-orange, red-green, yellow-purple. These combinations provide strong contrast and vibrancy.

Analogous Colours

Using 2–4 colours adjacent to each other on the colour wheel creates a harmonious, calm atmosphere. The sea blue-turquoise-green combination is a fine example of this.

The 60-30-10 Rule

A balanced interior is obtained when the main colour is used at 60% (walls), the supporting colour at 30% (furniture) and the accent colour at 10% (accessories).
