Things to Consider When Painting in Winter

Paint Application in Winter

The winter months are the most challenging period for paint application. Low temperature and high humidity extend the drying time of paints and negatively affect quality. However, with the right precautions, successful results can be achieved in winter too.

Temperature Limits

For water-based paints the minimum ambient temperature should be +5°C and the surface temperature +8°C. Application should not be done below these values. For oil-based paints the limit is a little more flexible.

Moisture Control

Relative humidity should not exceed 85%. High humidity causes paints to dry very slowly and sweating to form on the surface. Ambient conditions can be improved with a dehumidifier or heater.

Ventilation

Since the chance to open windows decreases in winter, the build-up of paint fumes in the environment requires attention. Ventilating at short intervals and using personal protective equipment are essential.

Facade Warning

On days with a risk of frost in Istanbul, exterior painting must never be done. The paint dissolves before adhering to the surface and starts to blister.
