How to Repair Wall Cracks? A Step-by-Step Guide
Wall Crack Repair
Beyond causing aesthetic concern, wall cracks can in some cases be a sign of structural problems. Choosing the correct diagnosis and appropriate repair method is critically important.
Types of Cracks
Hairline cracks: These form during the natural drying of the plaster or seasonal expansion-contraction; they are usually superficial and can be repaired easily.
Structural cracks: Cracks wider than 3 mm, diagonal or in a staircase shape are a sign of a foundation or load-bearing element problem; they require expert intervention.
Materials
- Filler or satin plaster
- Acrylic filler for deep cracks
- Reinforcing tape or scrim tape (to prevent re-cracking)
- Spatula, sandpaper
Application
The crack is widened and the dust and paint inside are cleaned out. Filler is applied to the moistened surface. After drying it is sanded. If necessary a second coat is applied. Finally, paint is applied after priming.
