How to Use a Colour Chart When Choosing Paint

From Colour Chart to Reality: Why Does It Look Different?

The tone on the colour chart you liked in the store can look unexpectedly different when applied to the wall. This is an extremely common situation with several causes.

Light Conditions

Colour is perceived differently under different light sources. The store's fluorescent light and your home's natural or warm light show the same colour in completely different tones. Take the colour chart home and assess it by the window.

The Effect of Surface Size

A small colour sample looks much darker and more intense when applied to a large wall. For this reason, choosing a tone lighter than the one you have in mind is a smart approach.

Test Painting

Before making a purchase decision, paint a test area of at least 50×50 cm. Observe the paint in both daylight and lamp light.

Brand Differences

Even the "white" tone of different brands can differ considerably. When giving a colour reference, using an NCS, RAL or Pantone code provides a correct, brand-independent match.
