Brush or Roller? The Effect of Tool Choice on Paint Quality

Choosing the Right Paint Tool

Besides paint quality, the application method and the tools used largely determine the final result. The wrong tool choice leads to streak marks, uneven texture and paint waste.

Brush

Ideal for corners, frames and narrow areas. Natural bristles are preferred for oil-based paints and synthetic bristles for water-based paints. To minimise brush marks, the brush should not be overloaded.

Roller

The fastest and most uniform tool for large surfaces. The nap thickness is chosen according to the surface texture: 5 mm for smooth surfaces, 12–15 mm nap for rough surfaces.

Spray Gun (Airless)

Used in professional applications, this system provides the most uniform surface. It saves great time on large-area work but requires masking and covering preparation.

Foam Roller

For applications requiring a very flat, smooth surface (satin paint, lacquer), a foam roller is preferred. It leaves no marks but is slow on large areas.
