Painting Kitchen Cabinets: A Step-by-Step Guide
Kitchen Cabinet Painting Guide
Replacing kitchen cabinets is an expensive, time-consuming process. Painting, meanwhile, can create a similar sense of renewal at around 20–30% of the cost.
Surface Preparation
Before painting, the cabinet doors should be removed from their hinges and the surfaces wiped thoroughly with a grease and dirt remover. Glossy surfaces should be matted with 120–180 grit sandpaper.
Primer Choice
A special primer is essential for paint adhesion on wood, laminate or MDF surfaces. Without a primer, the paint peels off in a very short time.
Paint Choice
For kitchen cabinets, high-durability, cleanable paints defined specifically as "cabinet paint" or "lacquer" should be used. Solvent-based paints provide a much harder surface but have a strong odour.
Application Technique
Using a foam roller or spray gun instead of a standard roller minimises streak marks. A 24-hour drying period should be allowed between each coat, with light sanding.
