Wallpaper Removal Methods: Stripping Without Damage
How to Strip Wallpaper
Removing old wallpaper is a mandatory step before applying new paper or paint. When done with the wrong technique, the plaster can be damaged or fibre residue can negatively affect the new application.
Dry Stripping Method
Some vinyl papers can be dry-stripped in one piece. The surface layer is separated by gently pulling from one corner of the paper. The bottom layer (backing) is removed by the wet method.
Wet / Water Method
Paper wetted with a sponge or sprayer softens and comes away easily with scraping. Adding a few drops of liquid detergent or fabric softener to the water speeds up dissolving the adhesive.
Steam Machine
In professional stripping work, a steam machine is the most effective method. High-temperature steam instantly dissolves the adhesive and the paper comes off effortlessly. However, it must be used carefully on plasterboard walls.
Chemical Solutions
Wallpaper-remover solutions sold on the market are especially effective on multi-layer applications. After the waiting time specified in the product instructions, the paper is easily cleaned off by scraping.
Surface Repair
Scratches and dents that appear after removal should be filled with filler, sanded and primed. When this step is skipped, the new covering will not look perfect.
