Calculate the number of rolls from your room size, ceiling height and pattern repeat — with an estimated labour cost.

To calculate how many rolls of wallpaper you need, divide the net wall area by the ceiling height to get the wall width, divide that by the roll width to get the number of drops (strips), then divide by the drops you can cut from one roll. Example: a 4 × 5 m room with a 2.60 m ceiling, one door and one window has about 43.2 m² of wall; with standard 0.53 × 10.05 m rolls you get 3 drops per roll and need 32 drops, i.e. 11 rolls. How is the number of rolls calculated?

Measure the walls: Measure the total width of the walls to be papered. For a whole room this is the perimeter: 2 × (width + length).
Measure the ceiling height: Measure from the skirting board to the ceiling; add about 10 cm for trimming at the top and bottom.
Deduct doors and windows: A standard door is about 0.9 × 2.1 m and a window about 1.2 × 1.4 m; subtract them from the wall area.
Choose the roll and pattern repeat: Enter the roll width and length from the label and the pattern repeat (0 for plain papers).
Calculate drops and rolls: Drops per roll = roll length ÷ drop length (round down); rolls = drops needed ÷ drops per roll (round up). Add one spare roll.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square metres is one roll of wallpaper?

A standard European roll is 0.53 m × 10.05 m, about 5.33 m². Wide rolls are 0.70 × 10.05 m (about 7 m²) and 1.06 × 10.05 m (about 10.6 m²). Always check the label, because some brands use different lengths.

How do I calculate how many rolls of wallpaper I need?

Measure the total width of the walls (the room perimeter) and the ceiling height. Add about 10 cm to the height for trimming; this is the drop length. Divide the roll length by the drop length to find the drops per roll, divide the wall width by the roll width to find the drops needed, then divide the drops needed by the drops per roll and round up.

How does the pattern repeat affect the calculation?

With a patterned paper each drop must start at the same point of the pattern, so the drop length is rounded up to a whole number of pattern repeats. A 53 cm or 64 cm repeat can reduce the drops per roll from 4 to 3, which means more rolls for the same room.

Should I buy a spare roll?

Yes, we recommend one spare roll, especially for patterned papers. Rolls from a different production batch can differ slightly in colour, so all rolls for one room should carry the same batch number.

How much does wallpaper installation cost?
