Can Exterior Painting Be Done in Winter?

It can, but not on every day. In winter exterior paint is applied only on days when the air and the wall are warm and dry enough; most manufacturers advise against application below +5 °C and before nights when frost is expected. The exact limit is stated in the data sheet of the product used.

Four things that cause trouble in winter

  • Low temperature: water-based paint cannot form a sound film in the cold.
  • Frost: paint that freezes before it dries cracks and chalks.
  • Damp and dew: the surface stays wet and the paint does not bond.
  • Short days: there are fewer working hours and drying between coats takes longer.

What to watch if it is applied in winter

  1. Work starts in the mildest hours of the day, on the facade in the sun.
  2. The temperature of the wall is checked; a wall in shade is colder than the air.
  3. The night temperature and the forecast for the following days are checked.
  4. A longer drying time is left between coats.

Which jobs can be done in winter?

If the survey, quote and colour choice are completed in winter, work starts as soon as spring arrives. When the weather allows, washing and crack repair can also be done.

Is winter in Istanbul suitable for painting?

Winter around the Marmara is mostly mild but wet; suitable days do come, but the schedule cannot be guaranteed. Unless there is an urgent reason, leaving the job until spring is safer.

How can you tell paint was applied in the cold?

In the first spring look for chalking, flaking and differences in shade. Erdağ Yapı sets the application day by the product data sheet; details are on our exterior facade paint page.
