What Is the Best Season to Paint an Apartment Block's Exterior?

In Istanbul the best period for painting an apartment block's exterior is from late spring to early autumn: the air is mild, there is little rain and the days are long. Painting is not done in the hottest hours of summer or on cold, wet winter days.

Season by season

• Spring: the temperature is ideal; sudden showers mean the forecast has to be watched.
• Summer: long, dry days are an advantage; in the midday heat paint dries too fast, so work is done in the morning and late afternoon.
• Early autumn: mild, still weather makes this the easiest period; dew and rain increase as the weeks go on.
• Winter: only on mild, dry days, and to a limited extent.

Why is painting not done in hot weather?

Paint applied to a wall heated by the sun dries before it bonds to the surface; brush and roller marks remain and joins show. That is why painters follow the shade, facade by facade.

When should preparation start for an apartment block?

1. In winter: the decision, the survey and collecting quotes
2. In early spring: choice of colour and system, scaffolding plan
3. When the weather warms: washing, repairs, primer and paint

What should residents do during the work?

Windows are kept closed, items on balconies are taken inside and cars are parked away from the facade. Curtains can be kept drawn while the scaffolding is up.
