Can Italian Paint Be Used in a Bathroom?

Yes; Italian paint can be used in a bathroom, but not in the same way on every wall. On walls away from splashes it works well with a protective final coat; on surfaces that are constantly wet, such as inside a shower, only the system the manufacturer recommends for wet rooms should be applied.

Which zone, which solution?

  • Behind the basin and WC, dry walls: a lime-based finish with a water-repellent protective coat is enough.
  • Around the bath: a water-repellent final coat is essential, and the joint between bath and wall is sealed with silicone.
  • Inside the shower: a waterproofed surface, a finish suitable for wet rooms and several protective coats are needed; otherwise tiles are the safer choice.

Why does a lime-based finish suit a bathroom?

It lets water vapour through, so the wall can breathe. Because lime is naturally alkaline, it does not offer conditions in which mould thrives.

Mistakes that cause problems

A bathroom with no ventilation, a shower wall with no waterproofing, and skipping the protective coat. If water comes from behind the finish rather than from the front, no decorative product will last.

Can it be applied over tiles?

Sound tiles can be covered once the joints are filled and a suitable primer is applied; loose tiles are removed first. In its decorative paint applications, Erdağ Yapı checks the bathroom for these points during the survey.
