Does Glass Textile Burn? What Is Its Fire Class?
Glass textile is a flame-retardant wallcovering. According to Vitrulan's SYSTEXX catalogue almost all products are class B-s1, d0 under EN 13501-1; SYSTEXX Active FireProtect, used with its special adhesive, reaches class A2-s1, d0, which means it is classed as non-combustible.
How to read the class code
- A2: non-combustible. B: flame-retardant.
- s1: no smoke or hardly any smoke in a fire.
- d0: no burning droplets or particles.
The wallcovering alone does not decide the class
The fire class is tested as a system: adhesive, wallcovering and paint together. With FireProtect, class A2 applies when its special alkali-silicate adhesive and a paint that is also classed as non-combustible are used. If any one of them is changed, the certificate no longer applies.
Where is a non-combustible class required?
The manufacturer recommends FireProtect in particular for escape routes in public buildings, such as corridors and stairwells. Which class is required is decided by the project's fire report and the regulations in force.
Is standard wallpaper adequate in terms of fire?
In homes it is usually not an issue. In buildings such as hotels, hospitals, schools and offices a product with a documented class is required; the class is stated on the label and in the declaration of performance.
