How Many Times Can Glass Textile Wallcovering Be Painted?

According to the SYSTEXX catalogue of the manufacturer Vitrulan, glass textile can be repainted 10 to 15 times. The number depends on the depth of the texture: every coat of paint fills the texture a little.

Why can it be painted so many times?

Glass yarn does not soak up paint and swell, and it does not change size when wet. The wallcovering stays on the wall; only the colour on top is renewed. There is no stripping, scraping and re-covering as with wallpaper.

What lowers or raises the number?

  • Fine texture: fills and flattens after fewer coats.
  • Deep texture: herringbone and coarse weaves take more coats.
  • Paint applied thickly: closes the texture early; thin, even coats extend its life.

What does this mean for businesses?

A hotel room, an office or a school corridor is repainted every few years. On a glass textile wall that job is paint only; when the tenant or the corporate colour changes there is no cost for stripping and surface preparation.

What is done before repainting?

The wall is cleaned of dust and grease, stains are wiped off and any lifted seams are glued back. It is not sanded; sanding damages the texture.

Can you go from a dark colour back to a light one?

Yes. Two coats of a paint with good hiding power are usually enough, and the texture is not affected. In Bahçeşehir, Beylikdüzü and Başakşehir, Erdağ Yapı also carries out a survey for repainting existing glass textile walls.
