Is Wallpaper Wipeable? Can You Really Wash It?
Yes, wallpaper can be wiped; but "washable" does not mean washing it down with water. How well a paper can be cleaned depends on its surface and is shown by the wave symbol on the label.
Cleaning by type
- Vinyl-surfaced paper: wipe with a damp cloth and a little soapy water; if there is a brush symbol, a soft brush can be used too.
- Non-woven paper without vinyl: wipe with a slightly damp cloth, without pressing.
- Traditional paper-backed wallpaper: dust with a dry cloth only.
- Textile wallpaper: keep it away from water; a soft brush or the brush head of the vacuum cleaner is enough.
The right way to wipe
Wring the cloth out well and do not wet the wall. Wipe from top to bottom, parallel to the seams; if water gets into a seam the edges lift over time. Bleach, scouring powder and hard sponges damage the print and the embossing. Try any new cleaner first on a spot that is out of sight, such as behind the sofa.
When there is a stain
The sooner you deal with a stain, the more easily it comes out. Blot grease splashes with kitchen paper; do not rub. Pen marks usually come off a vinyl surface with a damp cloth; on paper and textile surfaces they may leave a trace.
Can wallpaper be cleaned with a steam cleaner?
No. Hot steam softens the paste and opens the seams; a steamer is used for stripping wallpaper, not for cleaning it.
If you are looking for a design for a wall that will be wiped often, see our vinyl wallpaper options; for kitchens and children's rooms we recommend products with at least two waves.
