Working with Period Detail

Where a room has cornices, dado bands and a ceiling rose, where the decorative surface begins and ends is part of the design. Stopping the texture below the band makes the room look taller and frames the period detail; carrying it up to the ceiling suppresses that detail. During application the edges of these features are masked and protected and, where needed, cleaned and repaired with the same system. This is not fast work; but the result is a surface that grows out of the room's character rather than being added to it.

Ordinary paint covers the wall in a single flat colour. Italian decorative finishes are trowelled on in layers, giving depth and a surface that changes with the light — it adds texture, not just colour.

How many coats are applied, and is waiting needed between them?

Usually three: a build coat, a texture coat and the burnish. The waiting time depends on the chemistry; it lengthens in winter and in humid weather, and we put that in the schedule from the start.

Should I choose marmorino or stucco veneziano?

Veneziano's shine reveals every irregularity, so the substrate must be perfect. Marmorino hides slight undulation. The state of the wall usually makes the choice for you.

Is there a smell during application?

Lime and water-based products give off no solvent smell; a faint lime scent clears within hours. Where a solvent-based sealer is used we suggest a day of ventilation.

Can the surface be cleaned if it gets marked?

Yes, but it depends on the finish coat. Polished veneziano resists water and marks; matt marmorino without a sealer can hold a stain, especially on a kitchen wall.
