Wallpaper Installation in the Princes' Islands

A large share of the buildings on Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada and Kınalıada are timber-framed mansions. Wallpapering in these houses is technically different from doing so in a concrete-framed flat. Erdağ Yapı Dekorasyon carries out imported and domestic wallpaper installation across the Islands.

Walls Move in a Timber Building

In timber-framed mansions the walls take up and release moisture with the seasons; the structure works, if only by fractions of a millimetre. On lath-and-plaster surfaces this movement produces fine cracks over time. A stiff, taut covering cannot follow that movement and opens at the joints. In these buildings we use coverings that can flex and tolerate tension, together with an intermediate lining layer — this layer absorbs small movement in the wall and does not pass it on to the covering above. The right primer also balances absorbency on surfaces that mix timber and plaster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you come out to the Islands?

Yes, we serve Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada and Kınalıada. Because materials travel by sea, we finalise measurements at the survey and ship in a single run.

Can wallpaper be used in a timber mansion?

Yes, but the system differs. A timber building works with the seasons; a stiff, taut covering cannot follow that movement and opens at the joints. We use flexible coverings with an intermediate lining layer.

What does the intermediate lining do?

Also known as lining paper, it absorbs small movement in the wall and does not pass it to the covering above; it also balances absorbency on mixed timber and plaster surfaces.

How long does installation take?

A single room takes one day and mansion floors 3-6 days depending on scope. Surface preparation is added to this.

What does it mean for a wall to be ready for wallpaper?

It means the surface is dry, dust-free and evenly absorbent. Skim-coated plaster is fine; glossy oil paint is sanded back and flaking paint is scraped off. That is why the primer coat is never skipped.

Do I need to empty the room of furniture?

No. Moving items to the centre and covering them works. Only heavy pieces standing against the wall need clearing, along with pictures and curtain rails.

Will the seams be visible?

When the pattern repeat is matched, the seam disappears into the design. On plain colours we work the seams away from the window to minimise shadowing.

How do you calculate how many rolls are needed?

We take the square metres from wall width and height, then add the pattern repeat. The larger the repeat, the greater the waste; a 64 cm repeat wastes noticeably more than a plain product. We finalise it at the survey.

Can wallpaper go on a damp wall?

No. When we see a water mark we take readings and look for the source — a leak from next door, a facade joint, or condensation. Work done before the source is closed doesn't last.
