Does a Travertine-Effect Wall Deteriorate Over Time?

A correctly applied travertine-effect wall does not deteriorate on its own; it is a mineral finish and hardens as it cures. Damage almost always comes from outside: damp, movement in the substrate, knocks or wrong cleaning.

Four causes of damage

  • Damp from behind: leaks and rising damp make the finish blister and bring salts to the surface.
  • Cracks in the substrate: if the plaster cracks, the crack shows in the finish too.
  • Knocks: external corners and door edges are damaged most.
  • Wrong cleaning: acidic and abrasive products dull the surface.

Does the colour fade?

Lime-based finishes are tinted with mineral pigments, which are lightfast. Indoors, no noticeable fading is expected.

Does dust collect in the pores?

Dust can settle in a deep texture over time. A soft brush or the brush head of a vacuum cleaner is enough; the protective final coat reduces how much dust sticks.

What makes it last longer?

Have damp and crack problems solved before the application, ask for corner beads on external corners and have the protective coat renewed when it wears. During the survey Erdağ Yapı checks the damp and the plaster of the wall; for travertine designs see ithalduvarkagit.com.
