Where Should You Start a Home Renovation?

A home renovation starts not with looking for tradesmen but with writing down what is to be done. First a list of needs is drawn up, then the budget is set, a survey is carried out and the jobs are put in order of importance. Demolition and painting come after these steps.

The right start in five steps

1. List of needs: write down what is to be done in each room; separate the essential from the optional.
2. Budget frame: set the upper limit you can spend and leave a margin for unexpected work.
3. Survey and written quote: show the home on site and have every item of work written down.
4. Priorities: hidden work first (plumbing, wiring, waterproofing), visible work afterwards.
5. Choice of materials: choose made-to-order items such as kitchen units and doors early.

The most common mistake

Starting with paint and flooring and leaving the plumbing and wiring for later. Every channel cut afterwards damages the newly finished wall and floor.

If the budget is tight, what can be postponed?

Decorative work: wallpaper, a feature wall and light fittings can be done later. Plumbing, wiring and waterproofing cannot be postponed.
