My Walls Look Empty: What Can I Do for a Modern, High-Quality Look?

My Walls Look Empty: What Can I Do for a Modern, High-Quality Look?

The most lasting way to fill a wall that looks empty is not to hang things on it but to work on the wall itself: a single feature wall, mouldings, a textured finish and the right light. Trying to fill every wall looks crowded; doing one wall well looks high quality.

Four effective methods

  • Feature wall: wallpaper or decorative paint on one wall; the others stay plain.
  • Wall mouldings: mouldings in frame shapes are painted the same colour as the wall and add depth to a flat surface.
  • Texture: lime-based decorative paint or fabric-effect wallpaper enriches even a single-colour wall.
  • Light: wall lights and concealed lighting bring the texture out; without light, texture goes unnoticed.

Which wall should be chosen?

The one you see first on entering, not broken up by doors and windows, with the main furniture in front of it: the sofa or TV wall in the living room, the wall behind the bed in the bedroom.

Three rules for a quality look

  1. Few colours: one main tone and one accent.
  2. Clean workmanship: corners, seams and skirting junctions must be neat.
  3. Matt, textured surfaces; gloss paint shows every flaw in the wall.

When do pictures and mirrors come in?

After the wall is finished, few in number and large in size. Many small frames break up the effect of a wall that has been worked on.

Where to start?

With one room and one wall. See Erdağ Yapı's decorative wall moulding and interior decoration consulting pages.
