How Can I Protect Customer Traffic During a Shop Renovation?

Customer traffic is protected by splitting the renovation into sections and moving it to the hours when there are no sales. Rather than closing the shop completely, working in phases, doing noisy jobs at night and keeping the shopfront open is enough for most refurbishments.

Five methods

  1. Phased renovation: the shop is divided in two; one half keeps trading while the other is renewed.
  2. Night and closed-day work: demolition, sanding and flooring are done after closing.
  3. Dust screens: the working area is closed off from ceiling to floor and stock is covered.
  4. Shopfront and entrance stay open: customers must be able to see from outside that the shop is trading.
  5. Announcement: a "we are refurbishing" sign and social media stop people assuming you are closed.

Which jobs should be done while closed?

New flooring, ceiling work and renewing the till area. Painting and wallcoverings can progress section by section while the shop is open.

What changes in a shopping-centre unit?

The centre management's rules on working hours, the delivery entrance and permit paperwork apply; work is mostly planned for after closing. Erdağ Yapı helps with the documents and drawings for these permits.

When is the best time?

The period when sales are lowest. Choose quiet weeks rather than the weeks just before a new season or a campaign. For a programme, request a survey from our workplace renovation page.
