Why Is Italian Paint Different From Ordinary Paint?

Ordinary paint covers the wall in a single flat colour. An Italian decorative finish is trowelled on in layers, giving a surface that changes with the light; it adds texture, not just colour, and you cannot get that with a roller. Marmorino is matt and durable, for everyday rooms; Stucco Veneziano is glass-like and deep, reading best in the high-ceilinged living rooms of Nişantaşı and Şişli but demanding a perfect substrate. Marble effect gives the look of marble without its price, and concrete effect and micro-cement are favoured in modern living rooms and behind kitchen worktops.

Application and Samples

What Italian paint finishes are there?

The most widely applied are Marmorino (matt, lightly textured), Stucco Veneziano (polished and glossy), Travertino, marble effect, concrete effect, micro-cement and aged or antique techniques. Which suits you depends on how the room is used and the state of the wall.

What is the difference from ordinary paint?

Should I choose Marmorino or Stucco Veneziano?

What sets the per-m² price of Italian paint?

The technique chosen, the number of coats and the starting condition of the wall. Matt marmorino sits at the lower end, burnished veneziano and marble effect at the top because coats and handwork increase. We show material and labour separately.

Why does marble effect cost more?

Every vein is worked by hand and no two walls come out the same. That work takes noticeably longer than a matt marmorino. In return it gives the look of marble without its cost or weight.

How many coats, and is waiting needed?

Two to four depending on the product. Marmorino needs 4-6 hours between coats, lime-based finishes longer. The wait cannot be skipped; if the coat below is not fully dry the surface will not bind and will chalk later.

How many days does one room take?

A single wall takes a day, a medium room 2-3 days, a whole living room 3-4 days. Techniques needing veining work, and high-ceilinged rooms, add a day.

Is there a smell during application?

Our products are water-based, so there is no solvent smell. A faint lime scent clears within hours. We have worked in homes with babies and expectant mothers without issues.

Is it suitable behind a kitchen worktop?

Micro-cement and concrete effect are often chosen here; they give a seamless, easily cleaned surface. A protective coat is essential — an unsealed lime surface draws grease in.

Can it be used on facades?

Yes, with lime-based products, which are preferred because they breathe. We worked on the facades of Merter Collesium AVM and Patio in Bebek. Application depends on the weather: rain or nights below 5 degrees postpone it.

Can the surface be cleaned if marked?

Sealed surfaces wipe down with a damp cloth. If you want a wipeable surface, say so at the start so we choose the finish coat accordingly.

How is colour chosen — are samples available?

We prepare the sample in your own wall's light, not from a catalogue. We work a 30x30 trial patch and ask you to view it morning, midday and evening. There is no extra charge for that trial.

Can it go over existing paint?

Over sound, matt emulsion it can, with a primer. Glossy oil paint or a flaking layer must be stripped; it never goes over distemper. We decide with a tape test.

Can it be used in clinics and offices?

Yes. We have worked in clinics in Nişantaşı and at Merter Collesium AVM. In such spaces we specify a wipeable finish coat because cleaning is frequent.
