In a Home Renovation, What Comes First: Paint, Floor or Kitchen?

The order is this: first the plumbing and tiling of the kitchen and bathroom, then filler, primer and the first coat of paint on the walls, then the kitchen units and the flooring, and last of all the final coat of paint. The rule is simple: work that makes dust and uses water comes first, surfaces that scratch come later.

Why this order?

  • Kitchen and bathroom first: demolition, plumbing and tiling produce the most dust and rubble.
  • First coats before the floor: filler and sanding dust and dripping paint damage new flooring.
  • Floor near the end: parquet and laminate are laid when scaffolding and ladders no longer cross them.
  • Final coat last: marks made while fitting units and skirting are covered by this coat.

Kitchen units before the flooring?

With floating floors such as laminate and parquet, yes: the units are fitted first and the floor is laid up to them. With a tiled floor the tiles go down first and the units stand on them.

When is wallpaper hung?

At the very end, after the floor, the skirting and the final coat on the ceiling. Once the paper is up, no dusty work is done in the room.

Can I have the jobs done at different times?

Yes, but keep the same order: kitchen this year and flooring next year works; the reverse spoils finished work. In an apartment renovation, Erdağ Yapı gives the order of work in writing with the quote.
